Wheeling: A Brief History
The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which allowed the National Road to be extended into Ohio, was a triumph of engineering, and by 1853 was being called one of America’s principal landmarks. The bridge remains in use to this day. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark and a civil engineering landmark and is listed with the International Council of Monuments and Sights. |
